Welcome!

This is a journal of our lives with my mom, affectionately known as Little Mama. In her 90's, she is a sweet, spunky, spirited, sometimes exasperating, tiny little lady that now lives with moderate dementia and macular degeneration. These journal entries show the good times and the not-so-good times.

Little Mama's type of dementia is age-related and is not hereditary. Sometimes, she appears to be perfectly normal. Other times, it is obvious that something is amiss. It is her desire to remain in our home rather than live out her days in an assisted living facility. It is my prayer that we will be able to honor her in this way. We feel blessed...and challenged...that she lives in our home. This is not easy, and important things rarely are easy. It takes an emotional and physical toll on the caregivers. I've been through the 7 stages of grief at least once if not more! If you are in a similar situation, you understand what I mean! Fortunately, our family helps a lot both physically and emotionally. It takes a team.

The fourth commandment tells us to honor our parents. That is done in many different ways. If you are struggling with a decision, please pray and ask for guidance and wisdom. Our Lord will let you know how He wants you to honor them. Regardless of the way you honor your loved ones, you will need support. So build your team, whether it is from members of your family or a support group.

I am finally learning that: I can't fix it. I can't change it. All I can do is accept it, trust God, and roll with it. (My condensed version of the Serenity Prayer.) We are learning to relax, laugh, and savor every moment we have with my mom on this side of Heaven.

So, scroll down.... read the entries...laugh and cry with us.

Blessings!
Lisa

October 2012: WILL YOU HELP ME FIND MY BED?

October 6, 2012:  Little Mama folding laundry - one of her favorite things to do!

Evening of October 6, 2012
Oh, my, it's gonna be a long night! It’s 6:30 p.m. and Little Mama is already talking about needing to go to bed! Not happening... I told her to just open the back door and that cold air will wake her right up! :)

Little Mama really enjoyed American Restoration tonight... she asked a lot of questions! It's been a good night :)

October 12, 2012
One thing for sure.... it is never dull around our house! Phoebe, the Boxer puppy, aka Devil Dog has been into EVERYTHING today...not to mention having had 3 accidents since 5 p.m. Don't ya LOVE stepping in a puddle of something other than water with your bare feet??? And then there is Little Mama, my 91 year old mom with dementia. Today, she told the sitter "This is a nice place. The people are nice here." We are watching House Hunters International and I remarked about them being in the Dominican Republic. She said, "Oh, it’s nice that your family gets to go there." Lord, have mercy! Ahhh....a glass of wine will be very nice indeed! :)

Ever the hostess, Little Mama keeps asking me, "Do you want anything to eat or drink?" Sweet...

October 14, 2012
Little Mama doesn't remember she ate lunch AND she forgot that she can't cook b/c she can't see and isn't happy that she can't do it all herself. Whew!

It is 8:44 p.m.  Little Mama looks across the room at me and says, “Do you want to help me find a bed to sleep in?”  I giggled a little.  She smiled as if she were wondering why I was giggling.  I said, “You have a bed here.”  She said, “What?”  I repeated it.  She said, “Will you help me find it?” Sure thing…

October 16, 2012
Little Mama was with our daughter-in-law today.  Missy had a few loads of laundry for her to fold…she loves folding laundry.  Abby was at preschool this morning.  Abby’s friend, Lacey, and Lacey’s baby brother stayed with Missy for a couple of hours after preschool.  Lacey’s brother is 6 months old.  Little Mama had the best time with him!  She got down on the floor and played with him.  She called him Randi (our oldest granddaughter’s name).

So.... I tell my little mama that it is 10:00...time for bed. "Oh, my! Yes, it is!" As I hand her the toothbrush topped with toothpaste, she says, "I'm so glad you took over. I haven't been a very good hostess." She repeats this when I show her that her pj's are on her bed. So I reply, "It's okay... you live here." "Well, I know," she says, "But I don't know what I would have done if you ha
dn't taken over." I reply, "Really...it's okay. We live here, too." With that, we hug and say the good-nights and the I love yous. Oops! She's UP!!! She had to apologize..."I'm sorry I'm such a poor hostess and I didn't offer you anything." She takes a couple of steps and comes back.... "Is there another bed?" "YES, Little Mama! Everybody is settled...we all have a place to sleep and we have all had plenty to eat and drink.... now don't worry and go to bed...and don't get back up!" Cross your fingers and toes and hold your breath that she stays in bed! (Do you hear the Walton's theme song playing in the background? Or maybe Golden Girls?) Sweet dreams, all!

10/19/12:  Little Mama was getting her pj’s on when she said, “Don’t you wish I would get off your back?”  I replied with, “Umm, no.  If you were off my back, that would mean that you weren’t here anymore.  And I don’t want that.  Do you?”  She said, “No… I love you too much to leave you.”  Sweet.
